Title of event
Commemoration of the eighth week of prevention of lead poisoning
Is this event open to public?
Yes
Brief description of event
As part of the fight against the use of lead paints, Benin has, during this year, commemorated, like the international community, the week that prohibits the use of lead paints.
This activity took place under the aegis of the Ministry of the Living Environment and Sustainable Development (MCVDD) and the Ministry of Health (MS), with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO). On Monday October 26, 2020, the ministries in charge of the environment and health therefore, in collaboration with WHO, launched the commemorative week for the prevention of lead poisoning. In this context, the day of October 26, 2020 was reserved for discussions on the issue of environmental and health risks associated with the use of paints containing lead.
During the day, the stakeholders present discussed their knowledge of the topic and the risks inherent in the use of paints containing lead. A presentation on a study carried out in Benin by NGO members of IPEN made it possible to clearly establish the existence of paints containing lead in Benin. In fact, more than 60% of the paints analyzed contain lead. During this day posters were produced and distributed. The launch of the week saw the participation of the press to raise public awareness
The other days of the week allowed a small group to work on putting in place a regulation on the lead content of paints. This work was supported by an international partner, ABA ROLI, to help us put in place a sufficiently comprehensive text. A report of the activities was made to the MCVDD authorities; in this context, a presentation was made to the Board of Directors on health and environmental risks on November 20, 2020. It is important to point out that a threshold of 90 ppm has been retained by the stakeholders.
In parallel to these activities, a round table was organized by the NGO GAPROFFA and brought together consumers, NGOs working in the sector and users of paints. Discussions focused on knowledge of the topic, the establishment of regulations and the establishment of a roadmap to achieve a regulatory framework banning the use of lead paints.
.
Target audience for event
