Safe maternal and newborn care

On the occasion of World Patient Safety Day 2021, we invite you to sign up for an inspiring journey towards achieving safer care. Each year on 17 September, WHO will be proposing a set of World Patient Safety Day goals to facilitate action for improvement by health care facilities, organizations, providers and managers by focusing on a certain number of improvement goals associated with the theme of World Patient Safety Day of that year.

So, along with marking this important day, focused action on the goals for the coming year will contribute to improving specific aspects of patient safety at the point of care.

Whether you are a hospital, laboratory, single doctor clinic, nursing home, or work in ambulance services or primary care centre, we invite everyone to join us in this movement from the very first day. So let’s strengthen our resolve towards safer care TODAY!

This year, World Patient Safety Day is dedicated to maternal and newborn safety. In line with this, the goals for 2021–2022 are:

Goal 1: Reduce practices that are unnecessary and harmful to women and newborns during childbirth

Goal 2: Strengthen capacity and support of health workers for safe maternal and newborn care

Goal 3: Promote respectful care for safe childbirth

Goal 4: Improve safe use of medication and blood transfusion during childbirth

Goal 5: Report and analyze safety incidents in childbirth
