WHO China has launched its own microblog on Sina Weibo, Dr Bernhard Schwartländer, WHO Representative in China announced today.

"WHO is very excited about joining China's thriving Weibo community," Dr Schwartländer said.

"We want our Weibo to be an online space for health: a space for sharing high quality health information, and a platform for discussing and debating important health issues with China's millions of netizens," Dr Schwartländer added.

Initially, WHO China's microblog will focus on tobacco control issues - a critically important issue in China, which is the world's largest producer and consumer of cigarettes. The microblog will expand to other issues over time.

"We want China's netizens to tell us what they want to hear from us. And we very much look forward to engaging with the Chinese public on the health issues that matter to them - from smoking, to hospitals, to air pollution," said Dr Schwartländer.

"If you are a Weibo user, we invite you to visit our homepage, follow us, and tell us about the health issues that interest, inspire and excite you", Dr Schwartländer concluded.

WHO China's Sina Weibo homepage is at http://weibo.com/whoinchina.
