How can you help
We would like to get and incorporate your feedback on this first draft of the Implementation Guidance for School Health Services. Please download and review the draft guidance before submitting your feedback through the form.
What are School Health Services (SHS)?
- WHO guideline on school health services defines SHS as services provided by a health worker to students enrolled in primary or secondary education, either within school premises or in a health service situated outside the school premises that has an official agreement with the school to provide health services to the school’s students.
- SHS is part of the eight global standards for health-promoting schools and systems
Why do we need an implementation guidance for SHS and what is its aim?
- Recommended by the Guideline Development Group of the WHO guideline on school health services.
- Addresses implementation gaps identified through global assessments.
- The document offers practical guidance on organizing and improving school health services.
- The primary target audience are policy makers, planners and managers in charge of school health services at national and subnational levels, from the Ministry of Health and/or Ministries of Education.
- The secondary target audience are SHS providers, researchers, development partners and CSOs working for school health.
How was the SHS Implementation Guidance developed?
The development of this guidance took a comprehensive, step-wise approach including:
- Systematic reviews of peer reviewed and grey literature on implementation aspects of SHS.
- An international needs assessment with SHS experts, teachers, school principals, adolescents and young people and other interested stakeholders.
- A landscape analysis with SHS practitioners and national school health policy documents to collect exemplars.
- Oversight and input from a technical advisory group throughout the process
