Background
To support adolescent-responsive primary care, in 2015 WHO and UNAIDS have published Global standards for quality health-care services for adolescents and their implementation guidance. In the eight years since the documents were published, major initiatives were launched that advanced a positive vision of health that integrates physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being, and advances were made in models of care inclusive of telehealth consultations. WHO and partners therefore decided to update the global guidance to reflect these new realities.
In consultation with key stakeholders including adolescents, health-care providers, policy makers and other groups, a draft of the second edition of the standards was developed.
How was the draft of the second edition of Global Standards developed?
The development of this guidance took a comprehensive, step-wise approach including:
- Systematic reviews of peer reviewed and grey literature on quality of care for adolescents, and implementation aspects
- An international needs assessment with adolescents, health care providers, paediatricians, general practitioners, nurses and other cadres, as well as policy makers, CSOs and development partners.
- A landscape analysis of how quality of care is addressed in national adolescent health policies and strategies, and standards of care
- Oversight and input from a technical advisory group throughout the process
