XXV FIGO World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics

5 – 9 October 2025
Cape Town International Convention Centre, Cape Town, South Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN's Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP) are proud to join the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) at their 25th World Congress in Cape Town, South Africa, from 5 to 9 October 2025.

In partnership with FIGO, WHO and HRP will lead a dedicated stream of sessions throughout the Congress. These will address some of the most pressing challenges and opportunities in sexual and reproductive health today, including strengthening maternal and newborn care, advancing evidence-based contraception and abortion services, supporting the uptake of WHO guidelines and promoting access to life-saving health products. The sessions will also spotlight global threats to reproductive rights, innovative systems approaches, and country experiences in implementing WHO guidance across diverse settings. Together, they will share the latest science, provide a platform for exchange, and support health professionals to apply evidence in practice.

Participants at FIGO 2025 will be able to explore a wide array of WHO and HRP tools and resources designed to support work in advancing SRHR, support the continuum of care and protect the health for women and girls, everywhere.

A key highlight of FIGO 2025 will be the launch of the new WHO Consolidated Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Postpartum Haemorrhage. These guidelines bring together 51 recommendations covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment and supportive care, and introduce a new definition of postpartum haemorrhage based on the largest global analysis of maternal health data to date. Their joint release by WHO, ICM and FIGO on 5 October 2025 at the Presidential Session marks a major step forward in strengthening global responses to the leading cause of maternal mortality, ensuring earlier diagnosis and faster action to save women’s lives. A deep dive technical session on the latest developments in postpartum haemorrhage will take place later that afternoon (1:30-3:00 pm in the Watsonia room).

The same day, 5 October 2025, marks the first World Postpartum Haemorrhage Day, for which an advocacy framework has been developed by a cohort of partners working toward a world in which no woman suffers or dies because of excessive bleeding after birth. Please find ways to engage here.

The day before the Congress, on Saturday, 4 October, WHO will lead a full-day in-person training session for national trainers nominated by their respective professional associations. The session will provide detailed clinical training on preventing, diagnosing and treating postpartum haemorrhage in accordance with the new guidelines. Post-Congress, these national trainers will lead country-level efforts to roll-out updated clinical skills training in their countries.

This year WHO and HRP will host a virtual booth where you can explore more of the work, where the full WHO and HRP programme can be accessed, and where essential resources can be downloaded. The virtual booth will be open through the official FIGO 2025 Congress website.
