At the SuperHero School in Romania: promoting health as every child’s superpower

The WHO Country Office in Romania joined forces with the Romanian College of Dentists and the National Institute of Public Health to empower children and families with the knowledge and tools to adopt healthy habits at the start of the school year.

During the event, children engaged in practical demonstrations on proper handwashing, effective toothbrushing and dental floss use, learning how everyday routines can protect their health and prevent common illnesses. Families received tailored advice and resources to support their children in maintaining long-term healthy habits. Staff from the College of Dentists carried out free dental checks for schoolchildren, and WHO provided a mapping of dental services where additional checks or treatments were required.

The event also celebrated creativity and cultural exchange. With guidance from a cultural mediator, participants explored Petrykivka painting, a traditional Ukrainian decorative art recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This activity allowed children to develop artistic skills while fostering appreciation for cultural heritage. Through a mix of workshops, music and hands-on activities, children were encouraged to explore their personal strengths in a dynamic and playful environment.

Key outcomes from the event

  • Over 125 children benefited from preventive dental assessments.
  • Of these children, 59.5% were caries-free, while 40.5% showed cavities, underscoring the importance of early oral health education and checks.
  • More than 25 000 parents and children took part, strengthening awareness of preventive health across the community.

Event notice

The WHO Country Office in Romania will participate in the annual SuperHero School event, designed to promote health screening and create awareness of healthy behaviours among families and children at the start of the new school year.

The Country Office will connect with children and their parents via interactive and engaging activities on key health topics such as oral health, healthy eating habits and routine childhood vaccination, and will provide practical guidance and resources to support children’s well-being.

Combining learning with fun, the event encourages children to activate their superpowers of courage, creativity, friendship and energy through workshops, music, painting and other hands-on activities.

Preventive health: empowering children and families

Preventive health measures, including vaccination and oral hygiene, are essential for a safe and healthy start of the school year. WHO’s participation highlights the importance of community engagement, health promotion and accessible expert advice for families. By partnering with the festival and local stakeholders, WHO reaffirms its commitment to empowering children and families in Romania to make healthy choices and protect their well-being.
