The Global Malaria Programme is responsible for coordinating WHO's global efforts to control and eliminate malaria. Its work is guided by the "Global technical strategy for malaria 2016–2030" (GTS) adopted by the World Health Assembly in May 2015 and updated in 2021.

The Programme’s new operational strategy, published in April 2024, outlines GMP’s planned contribution towards the implementation of the GTS through 2030. It is guided by 3 equity-oriented principles and four strategic objectives:

Guiding principles

  • country ownership and leadership, with a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach;
  • resilient health systems to enable the success of national malaria responses;
  • equity in access to quality health services.

Strategic objectives

  • develop and disseminate norms and standards;
  • stimulate the development and timely introduction of new tools and innovation;
  • promote the use of strategic information for impact;
  • provide technical leadership of the global malaria response.

The work of the department is supported by the Malaria Policy Advisory Group (MPAG), which provides independent, strategic advice to WHO on all policy areas relating to malaria control and elimination.
