WHO's continued efforts in Brunei Darussalam focus on advancing universal health coverage through health system transformation. This includes periodic review of national plans for health and addressing critical bottlenecks in the health system and strategic gaps.

The WHO support is focussing on:

  • direction for service delivery architecture and service model.
  • health workforce plan in light of service delivery transformation
  • provider payment system to incentivize system re-orientation and contain costs
  • health technology assessment (HTA) mechanisms and processes to link with existing resource allocation processes
  • integration of health information systems to underpin ongoing monitoring to achieve optimum efficiency and effectiveness.

Health situation in Brunei Darrusalam

Maternal and child mortality and many communicable diseases have decreased significantly. WHO certified elimination and eradication of malaria in 1987, poliomyelitis free status in 2000 and elimination of measles in 2015.

The rising prevalence of non-communicable disease (NCDs) and their increased associated average treatment costs are causing fiscal pressures on a predominantly government funded health care system. Of further note are efforts to improve efficiencies related to current service delivery, human resources for health and health finance practices.
