Overview

As an action emanating from the Global priority research agenda to further the aims of GATE, the Global Research, Innovation, and Education in Assistive Technology (GREAT) Summit, as a GATE initiative, was held on the 3rd - 4th August 2017 at WHO headquarters in Geneva. The Summit brought together nearly 200 AT stakeholders including expert users, global researchers, innovators, and educators to discuss service delivery, research education, and training related to assistive technology policy, products, personnel, provision, and use.

The GREAT Summit has been transformative in:

1. advancing the global priority research agenda
2. establishing thematic research collaborations in:
a. effects, costs, and economic impact of assistive technology
b. assistive technology policies, systems, service delivery models, and best practices
c. high-quality and affordable assistive technology
d. human resources for the assistive technology sector
e. standards and methodologies for the assessment of assistive technology needs and unmet needs
3. identifying new research funding opportunities
4. accelerating innovative education and certification
5. working towards a common impact assessment tool and
6. showcasing ground-breaking research and education.
