People of the Western Pacific

“My biggest dream was to reach the Olympic Games one day. Through hard work, I fulfilled my dream. Whenever I’m overseas and the flag of Vanuatu flies above my head, I feel proud. I’m proud to represent my people.

I play table tennis.

I grew up in the islands. As a child, I ate island food, I would eat sprouted coconut, navel nuts- lots of fruits. I would also work in the garden. But when I arrived in town, life was very different. We are now seeing more and more noncommunicable diseases around the Pacific. And in Vanuatu, many people die from these diseases.

If you have an active lifestyle, you will feel good and you won’t develop these diseases.

Everyone has the right to play sport. Sport is like medicine for the body.

In Vanuatu, women must often be at home, cooking, cleaning and looking after the kids. Many older Ni-Vanuatu women don’t exercise. But I found a fitness called Zumba. I started to teach classes and I had women coming. We exercised together and they really like it.”
