During the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, 78 GOARN experts, 30 of whom were from WPR, assisted in 3 WPR countries, China, Viet Nam and Singapore. Roles attended included case management, communications, coordination, data management, emergency medicine, epidemiology and surveillance, infection prevention and control, information technology, laboratory, logistics, microbiology, operations, virology

A/H5N1, Cambodia and Vietnam

During the A/H5N1 outbreak in Cambodia in 2004, 3 GOARN experts assisted in-country in the roles of laboratory, epidemiology and surveillance, logistics.
During the A/H5N1 outbreak in Viet Nam in 2004, 30 GOARN experts which included 11 from WPR, assisted in-country. Roles included communications, coordination, data management, epidemiology and surveillance, laboratory, virology, logistics, veterinary.

Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) response in the Philippines

Super Typhoon Haiyan (known locally as Yolanda) made a landfall in the Philippines on 8 November 2013. The storm caused massive damage and casualties in 9 regions of the Philippines, affecting 16 million people and displacing 4 million. During the disaster response mission, 37 GOARN experts, 13 from WPR, assisted in-country in the roles of administration, case management, data management, epidemiology and surveillance, public health specialist, logistics, nurse, senior technical advisor.

COVID-19 Global Response, 2020 - 2023

From January 2020 to May 2023 seventy-two (72) individual GOARN experts to 89 deployment missions to 12 members states to support the COVID-19 pandemic response. 47% of the experts deployed were female. 34 GOARN partner institutions provided technical experts for deployment to the Region with 16 (47%) of these partners based within the Region.

2024

Measles, Mongolia

During the measles outbreak in Mongolia in 2024, 2 GOARN experts were deployed from WPR, to assist with clinical management and infection prevention and control. Through rapid action and expert surge support from WHO and GOARN, Mongolia averted a large-scale outbreak and strengthened its readiness to detect and respond to future imminent infectious disease outbreaks.
